Tonight (1/6) and tomorrow night (1/7) The Nels Cline Singers perform at Le Poisson Rouge’s Winter Jazzfest!
Since their formation in California nearly a decade ago, The Nels Cline Singers have performed throughout the world and released three albums on Cryptogramophone Records: “Instrumentals” in 2002, “The Giant Pin” in 2004 and “Draw Breath” in 2007. Performing original compositions by Cline, the band’s musical expression benefits from important contributions by both Amendola and Hoff, and it ranges moment to moment from delicate lyricism to sonic abstractions to skull-crunching flights of fancy. Their fourth album, “Initiate” is set for release in Spring 2010 on Cryptogramophone Records and juxtaposes the band’s first live recording with a collection of new studio tracks.

From Yuka Honda’s (If By Yes, Cibo Matto) interview with Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs)…
Y: And then how did you go into music? Is this something people ask you a lot?
M: Yeah. There was one puppet show I did. I worked for a company, and finally I decided I should have my own solo show. I had been always working on this idea of … What’s the word for it? This theme…There’s this essay by Jonathan Swift. It’s about eating Irish babies.
Y: I’ve read about this.
M: I had this idea about kids being sold as food or being eaten by culture, and so, in college, I had a show called Kindermunch, and that was on that theme, and then this one was called The Fat Kid Opera. It was me and a ukulele. I wanted it to be an opera, so I was writing songs, and it was about how the mother sells her fat kid to the butcher, and she escapes the butcher. It was a very short puppet show. I just realized that I liked writing the songs. The songs were so fun to work on, and the ukulele could just sound really creepy. So I was writing these really haunting songs.
